Science School of Physics for Pupils Came to an End on the Basis of European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva

How many elementary particles exist? How can they interact with each other? What experiments can be conducted at home to see their interaction? What courses of reactions take place in the Large Hadron Collider? These and other questions were set by sixteen participants of VII Science School for pupils on the basis of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) held on 24-28th of June in Geneva.

CERN is the biggest laboratory of High energy physics. Scientists from all over the world study elementary particles, their interactions between each other and properties there. Since 2011, when joint declaration with CERN on participation in the study programs of the scientific organization was signed, the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has been sending Ukrainian teachers and pupils to enhance their knowledge.

This year Science School for pupils started with Tetiana Berzhe-Hrynova’s lectures (LAPP Annecy, France). The youth found out that CERN unites 23 country-members, has 2300 full-time employees and more than a thousand on contract, and moreover almost 10000 scientists use the laboratory for their benefit. Besides, the scientist pointed out that there are known 400 types of particles and mentioned how new ones are being discovered. Also she explained principals of their interactions in the nature and acquainted pupils with programs of the European Organization for Nuclear Research in which Ukrainian scientists take part - ATLAS, CMS, ALICE, LHCb.

“Ukrainian associate membership has started a new era in cooperation between CERN and Ukrainian scientific community. For scientists, this is an opportunity to learn and develop careers, and for Ukrainian industry – a chance to negotiate CERN contracts,” summarized Tetiana Berzhe-Hrynova.

The pupils worked at SCool LAB CERN and at the laboratory of the Faculty of Physics of the University of Geneva. They observed collision of elementary particles and their interaction with isopropanol fumes and identified them monitoring motion tracks in the self-modeled diffusion chamber.

Moreover, the pupils had an opportunity to be at the heart of the Large Hadron Collider. Every five years the collider is shutdown for its two-year upgrade. During this time, one not only checks the technical functioning of the equipment, but also analyses data collected during its operation.

By the way, CERN Computer Center even after recent substantial modernization can provide only 40% of resources for storing data and approximately 30% for calculations. If one stacks up CDs with LHCb data, it will create almost a 20-kilometer pole!

The worldwide final of the Olympiad “Destination Imagination Global Finals 2019” was held at the end of May in Kansas-City (the USA). At the prestigious international event, four winning teams of First National Creativity Olympiad, such as “BrainStorm” (Vorochta, Ivano-Frankivsk region), “Tumbleweed” (Kyiv), UCCU (Kyiv), and O.K.O. (Sumy) presented Ukraine.
