ON A COSMIC SCALE
Results of First International Summer School of Earth Remote Sensing

Just fifty years ago children dreamed of becoming astronauts to see our planet from space. Nowadays, access to technology makes the children’s dreams come true easy, safe and fast without going to the space. Owing to JASU that got the status of Copernicus Academy, sixteen pupils finished observing the Earth surface at Zakarpattia.

In a week young scientists learnt how to use resources of the European Space Station, analyzed atmosphere pressure and found evidences of global warming using aerospace methods.

The busy school syllabus was packed with lectures, ecological games, excursions, films watching, and mountain hiking. However, for the most part it consisted of practical classes. The pupils had an opportunity to become real scientists because of using advanced technologies while exploring the Earth.

The school members ascertain themselves that the results of planet observations can be used to solve different kinds of safety problems on both national and global scales. Using space images the pupils studied peculiarities of different Ukrainian areas. They analyzed the consequences of emergency situations. They located the area of forest fire, the size of the natural disaster and reforestation (Kherson region). Besides, they identified when spring flooding on Desna River and Prypiat River started and estimated its width (the area of Kyiv Reservoir). And moreover, they studied the state of agricultural land by analyzing how land-use is changing in Vinnytsia region.

While studying, the pupils worked on group projects. Four teams presented their results at the last school day. The President of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Stanislav Dovhyi and a guest from Slovakia and an expert in GIS and Remote Sensing Radovan Gilbert visited the project defense. The expert Radovan Gilbert gave a lecture on the experience of practical usage of remote sensing and geographic information system. The scientific projects were focused on volcanic activity of Etna, glaciers, solar power in Ukraine, and the problem of algal bloom in the waters of Dnipro reservoirs. And the last project got the highest score.

Pupils from other countries also took part in the International Summer School of Earth Remote Sensing. Children from Poland, Montenegro, Slovakia, India and Kenya finished part of practical classes simultaneously with the members of JASU. The Junior Academy of Sciences expands the range of opportunities, impact and outlook while at the same time emphasizing prospects and image of its members.
