On December 5, there was a meeting of journalists and Mykola Ivanchenko, the JAS graduate, "Kyiv Polytechnic" student at the Laboratory of Experimental Studies "Ex Lab" of the Junior Academy of Sciences. The researcher brought home a victory in the International scientific projects contest during the “ExpoScience International MEXICO 2018” competition that was held in Morelia (Michoacán, Mexico) from November 28 to December 2.

This is not the first time when Mykola’s ideas get worldwide recognition. The time when the boy was the JAS student of 2017 he won gold medal at the GENIUS Olympiad in the USA, where he have become the best among the 1500 developers from all over the world. And now the student’s scientific solution was chosen the best in Mexico.

Mykola invented the technology of rapid water purification from petroleum, and thanks to it you can preserve nature, and avoid loss of useful minerals in case of an industrial disaster. The idea was acknowledged by international experts among 120 projects as the best one. The young man proposes to use adsorbent on the basis of perlite which is ecological, cheap and widespread rock in Ukraine.

‘Perlite is a water-repellent material that can gather petroleum and oil products in any aquatic environment whether it is an ocean, a sea or a river. Adsorbent repels water and absorbs petroleum. To gather 10 tons of petroleum you need 7 times less of perlite’ - Mykola told about the details of his discovery.

According to the young scientist, the rock firstly needs to get porous structure by a thermal shock before usage. In order to make perlite to gather only petroleum, not water, it should also be treated with water repellent. Then "black gold" can be extracted, and it won’t lose its features. The core of Mykola’s method is not to dispose of oil, but to gather and reuse it.

In "ExpoScience International MEXICO 2018" international contest people from 15 to 25 y.o. participated in various categories: social and human sciences, engineering, exact sciences, medicine and health, software and computer science, environmental sciences, education and upbringing, food and agronomic sciences, biology, materials science. The high level experts from each branch evaluated works and did it anonymously, and that contributes to the objective identification of the best projects.

Three students from the Junior Academy of Sciences together with Mykola represented Ukraine at the International scientific projects contest in Mexico. An 11th grade student from Ternopil region Anastasiya Stakhanska brought a study in medicine on the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity of biologically active phenolic substances of the underground organs of the Sanguisorba officinalis (or the great burnet). An 11th grade student from Poltava region Artur Vypovskyi demonstrated in the competition the system of remote monitoring and control of the condition of agricultural plants on the basis of modern information and communication technologies. Arthur Kachur, an 11th grade student from Chernivtsi presented the study of the movement of a spacecraft with sail.

During the visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Mexico an agreement on cooperation between the National Center "Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine" and the Interactive Museum of Economics of Mexico was signed at the Embassy of Ukraine in Mexico. The signing ceremony was held with the participation of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in the United Mexican States, Ruslan Spirin. The ambassador also held a meeting-dialogue with the JAS students, where they discussed the prospects of young scientists.

In order to popularize science and involve young people in researches, the Government of Ukraine decided to create the first State Museum of Science in Kyiv. The Interactive Museum of Economics of Mexico became one of the partners of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in this project. This is a unique center, which is ready to provide the necessary knowledge and technologies to create a permanent economic exhibition at the Museum of Sciences, and to create a Museum of Economics in Ukraine later.
