Young Chemists of JASU learnt about Pros and Cons of Polymers

Boiling hot or chilly, sunny or cloudy – summer can be different. However, regardless of weather conditions students of the Junior Academy of Sciences will always get an interesting scientific vacation. This happened with participants of the National Summer Chemistry School of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The studying united thirteen curious boys and girls that decided to make this hot season fruitful. The pupils were studying the “Polymers” topic at the International Center for Junior Scientific Creativity of JASU from 27th of June to 3rd of July.

Accompanied by scientists from the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of NASU, the pupils easily immersed themselves into unknown but familiar to everyone world of polymers. The pupils found out how extract these macromolecular compounds, learnt and checked their properties. They analyzed danger and harmful effects of polymer materials on the environment when used improperly or uncontrolled.

During one of the studying days, the participants visited “Ex Lab”, a laboratory of experimental research of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Owing to modern equipment and technical abilities, the children mastered the basics of contact lenses manufacture. Besides, they understood what smart-materials are and practically determined the migration of organic compounds from plastic.

As part of the School, the National Pupils Scientific Practical Conference “Polymers and Environment” was held. Pupils’ presentations covered a variety of topics, such as unlimited polymer capacities, advantages of polymer materials over others and their special features, ways of solving polymer waste problems, and current tendencies in polymer industry.

Specialists assert with confidence that rapid growth and progress of modern industrial technologies is significantly caused by achievements in polymer industry. This means that young chemists of the National Summer School of JASU worked on relevant topics. Therefore, they have time and possibilities to achieve their scientific potential if they continue conducting experiments.
