“These five years have flown by in an instant! It’s incredible that the museum continues to thrive and update its exhibits despite the war and all the challenges it brings. I hope this renewal will attract even more children and educators to join the development of this inspiring space,” said Yevhen Kudriavets, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine.
“Five years ago, together with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and our partners, we officially opened the Science Museum in Kyiv. Today’s anniversary event marks the first major renovation since then — an update of part of the second-floor exhibition. It presents two thematic areas: Energy and Construction. This shift from theoretical topics to practical, hands-on exhibits is vital, as it allows visitors to see science in action,” stated Stanislav Dovhyi, President of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The creation of this educational space took nearly a decade. During the initial launch of the Science Museum, the President of Ukraine and the JAS leadership initiated a nationwide program to establish science centres and museums across the regions. This initiative received support from the European Network of Science Centres and Museums (Ecsite), the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), and numerous science museums worldwide.
As part of this program, following the start of russia’s full-scale invasion, European partners provided exhibits to support JAS’s educational initiatives — some of which are now displayed in Science Museum in Kyiv.
Thematic Zones “Construction” and “Energy”: What They Reveal
The new “Construction” exhibition showcases technologies for rapid, mobile, and energy-efficient reconstruction — including 3D printing of concrete structures, material research, heat transfer principles, and housing design. The zone goes beyond technology: it serves as a symbol of Ukraine’s reconstruction and faith in its future.
The exhibits for the “Construction” zone were provided by NEMO Science Museum (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), one of Europe’s largest science museums. The transfer of this exhibition was coordinated by the Dutch Association of Science Centres and Museums (VSC), while its transport to Ukraine was made possible through the financial support of the National Museum of Science and Medicine (Leiden), the Sonnenborgh Museum and Observatory (Utrecht), and NEMO Science Museum (Amsterdam).
The “Energy” exhibition explores the nature of motion and force generation. Its interactive exhibits explain why energy independence is vital for the nation and allow visitors to experiment with various types of energy generation while learning how to use resources efficiently.
The exhibits for the “Energy” section were provided by the Experimenta Science Centre in Heilbronn, Germany.
“For the first time, our museum team independently created two full exhibition zones. Initially, we made tremendous efforts to obtain exhibits from international science museums. Later, the JAS team carried out a complete renovation, adapting them to local realities. We take great pride in this step forward. Our next goal is to produce exhibits entirely on our own. We have already begun this journey — developing exhibits for a travelling exhibition in cooperation with our German partners,” shared Olena Kvachevska, Acting Director of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.”
The opening ceremony for the new exhibitions brought together the JAS team, museum representatives, educators, journalists, scientists, and thought leaders. Among the guests were: Yevhen Kudriavets, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine; Stanislav Dovhyi, President of the JASU; Olena Kvachevska, Acting Director of the JASU; Vasyl Dunets, Deputy Director for Science Centre Development and International Strategic Projects of the JASU.
